It is a profound honor and a deeply humbling responsibility to address you as the 20th President of the Korean Society of Nephrology (KSN).
Over the past several decades, our Society has made remarkable progress in education, research, and clinical practice. Since transforming our annual spring meeting into the KSN International Congress in 2016, we have steadily strengthened our academic standing and global presence. This year, as we mark the 10th anniversary of that milestone, the resounding success of KSN 2026 has further established our position as a world-class nephrology organization. These achievements reflect the dedication of our past presidents and executive boards, together with the passion, commitment, and hard work of every member. I extend my deepest gratitude to all who have contributed to the growth and success of KSN.
Today, we face a rapidly changing healthcare landscape. National discussions on establishing a comprehensive chronic kidney disease (CKD) management system are gaining momentum, and the role of academic societies is becoming increasingly important amid evolving healthcare policies and a growing number of government-commissioned projects. At the same time, rapid advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are opening new frontiers in research and patient care while requiring higher standards for research integrity, data protection, and the ethical use of medical information. Ensuring the sustainability and institutionalization of home-based peritoneal dialysis programs, while addressing the acute shortage of nephrology professionals intensified by recent healthcare disruptions, also presents critical challenges that demand our immediate and collective action.
KSN must turn these challenges into opportunities for its next leap forward. Together with the 20th Executive Board, I am committed to leading the Society with a focus on the following four priorities:
First, we will establish KSN as a socially influential and policy-leading institution.
KSN has long contributed to public health through rigorous research and timely policy recommendations. Moving forward, we will actively participate in the enactment and implementation of the CKD Management Act. We will work to ensure that our expert perspectives are meaningfully incorporated into national kidney health policies, including the Korean Renal Data System (KORDS), dialysis quality assessments, and home-based peritoneal dialysis management systems. By proposing evidence-based policies that serve the public interest, we will firmly establish KSN as a socially responsible public organization.
Second, we will lead the way in the AI era on a foundation of ethics and trust.
Artificial intelligence is reshaping medicine and research. KSN will respond proactively by strengthening research and publication ethics and establishing clear principles for the protection and responsible use of healthcare data. We will develop comprehensive ethical guidelines for integrating AI into clinical practice and research while enhancing transparency in our governance and decision-making. Through these initiatives, we will continue to earn the deep trust of our members and society.
Third, we will foster a member-centered community and expand the role of nephrology specialists.
Our members—including clinicians, researchers, educators, and trainees—are KSN’s greatest asset. We will create an environment in which every member can benefit and thrive. In particular, we will build the institutional framework needed for board-certified nephrologists to play a central role in CKD management, dialysis, transplantation, and preventive care. We will also address workforce-development challenges and strengthen educational and career support to inspire talented young physicians to choose nephrology as their lifelong specialty.
Fourth, we will strengthen our global leadership and prepare for the future.
KSN has already established itself as a leading nephrology society in Asia. Now is the time to take the next major step. By successfully hosting the upcoming APSDA × KSN and APCM-ISPD 2027 international congresses, we will further enhance KSN’s global standing and help lead the advancement of nephrology throughout the Asia-Pacific region. I sincerely invite your active interest and participation.
Respected Members of KSN,
The future of our Society will be built together with you. Guided by open communication and collaboration, I will listen closely to your voices and lead KSN in responding dynamically to changing times. We will do our utmost to advance public health through academic excellence, fulfill our social responsibilities, and build a Society in which every member can take great pride.
I sincerely ask for your continued support, active engagement, and invaluable guidance as we move forward together.
Thank you.
June 2026
