초록	National Kidney Biopsy Registration in Taiwan Chiz-Tzung Chang MD, PhD, on behalf of Taiwan Society of Nephrology Taiwan is a nation with high incidence and prevalence of both CKD and ESRD, so understanding the epidemiology and etiologies of acute or chronic kidney disease is critical. Taiwan Society of Nephrology (TSN) proposed the registration of kidney biopsy results of Taiwan in 2013. Thus, the Committee of Kidney Pathology Archives was established. The registration also serves a purpose of policy-making, research and nephrology fellow training. A joint-IRB document was sent to all clinical kidney-fellow training hospitals. We started to collect data from hospitals with permission from their review boards in 2015. Pathology registration became a prerequisite for nephrology board examination after 2019. The data were recorded in a fixed format with clinical and pathological diagnosis and were sent to committee via mail twice a year. Collected data were analyzed and results were presented in TSN annual meeting every year and in printed form in Annual Report on Kidney Disease in Taiwan. From 2015 to 2019, there were 28 teaching hospitals that joined the national registration, and over 6675 kidney biopsy cases were registered. The mean age of patients receiving kidney biopsy was around 50 with half male and half female. The mean serum creatine was around 2.9 mg/dl and mean daily proteinuria was 4.9 g/d. Hematuria was present in half of these patients. Nephrotic syndrome (42.5%) was the most common clinical diagnosis and followed by acute kidney injury (22.5%). Graft nephropathy comprised 14.5% of pathological diagnosis, diabetic nephropathy 11.2% and lupus nephritis 9.9%. The remaining pathological diagnoses were mostly primary glomerulonephritis (n=3150, 47.2%). IgA nephropathy (n=832), focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (n=772), membranous nephropathy (n=590) and minimal change disease (n=508) were the most common primary glomerulonephritis. The clinical outcome of these kidney biopsy patients will be surveyed in the near future. From 2020 on, we plan to change our registration system to on-line registration to facilitate registration process. We also want to register not only kidney biopsy cases but also other renal diseases to help clarify the causes of high incidence and prevalence of renal failure in Taiwan.
