Two dialysis modalities, peritoneal dialysis (PD) and hemodialysis (HD), have distinctive characteristics. PD patients are trained to do the dialysis at home, therefore do not require frequent visits to the hospital. This has both advantages and disadvantages. The patient’s status is not frequently monitored in PD patients compared to HD patients. PD patients would only visit the hospital after significant progress despite the presence of complications. In addition, non-adherence with prescriptions is another problem in PD patients. These are associated with adverse outcomes and increased healthcare costs in PD patients. Remote patient monitoring is an emerging solution, which enables continuous monitoring and bidirectional communication in PD patients. Recent studies have shown the clinical efficacy of the remote patient monitoring in PD patients. |
