Establishment of "Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) Guidelines for Kidney Care Facilities" in Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology (ANZSN) Background/Context: Haemodialysis facilities have a high environmental impact due to high energy, water and consumable usage by haemodialysis equipment. As the number of people requiring dialysis increases, there is an urgent need for dialysis facilities to be both retrofitted and newly built in ways that enable them to meet care needs with minimum environmental impact. Green Nephrology initiatives have been long established in Australia by pioneering, dedicated clinicians resulting in the establishment of the ANZSN Environmental Sustainability Committee (ESC). The ANZSN ESC is a group of passionate doctors, allied health professionals and researchers advocating for better guidelines and practices in the environmental sustainability space and advising ANZSN on actions to foster, promote and support environmentally sustainable kidney care in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. Development of ESD Guidelines for Kidney Care Facilities: Best practice guidelines for the ESD and operation of haemodialysis facilities were developed following the engagement of Hip V. Hype Sustainability by the ANZSN ESC. Guideline development methodology included inception and desktop review, site assessments and opportunities matrix establishment, followed by guideline development. The ANZSN ESD Guidelines for Kidney Care Facilities identify opportunity areas including energy, water, waste and resource recovery, and additional sustainability. Impact/Discussion: These guidelines provide a tailored and comprehensive resource for the kidney care community to enable the integration of best practice sustainability considerations into both existing and new facilities. If broadly implemented, these guidelines have the potential to markedly improve the environmental impact of haemodialysis provision. The ANZSN congratulates the KSN on the release of their “Position Statement and Recommendations for Sustainable Kidney Care From KSN” at the 2024 APCN, Seoul, Korea. |
