KSN is preparing 2024 APCN under the motto of Green Nephrology. It is well known that the worsening of various environmental conditions is associated with the worsening of kidney disease or decrease in renal function. Paradoxically, the resources and by-products used in treatment processes for managing kidney disease, especially dialysis treatment, have been caused to pollute the environment with a significant burden. As interest in these problems increases globally, members of the KSN should renew the awareness on these problems and develop the measures ensuring that treatment is carried out by environmentally friendly manners. There has been active discussion about reducing carbon footprint of medical practices for a long time. Since the UK published a report estimating that the carbon footprint of the medical sector accounts for 25% of the entire industry and making efforts to reduce it, related research has gradually been conducted, and based on the results of such studies, the ANZSN published a practice guideline called “Environmentally Sustainable Design (ESD) Guidelines for Kidney care Facilities,” in 2022, which summarizes the need for environmentally conscious management and major methods for hemodialysis room facilities. Subsequently, various interests and efforts are being made in the United States, France, Japan, etc. to minimize the environmental impact of treating kidney disease patients, including dialysis treatment. In response to this, KSN would like to prepare and present a Recommendation for Sustainable Kidney Care (SKC) at APCN to attract members' interest and serve as a reference for participating in this movement in the future. |
