초록 The number of patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) exceeded 100,000 in 2018. Since then, the number of ESKD patients has been steadily increasing. In particular, the number of hemodialysis patients with ESKD is mostly driving the increase in the number of ESKD patients. Similar to the growth in prevalence, the incidence of ESKD also tends to increase overall. On the other hand, the number of hemodialysis patients, which greatly influences its incidence, seems to have plateaued since 2020. The incidence of kidney transplantation (KT) have been on a rapid upward trend since 2010, but in recent years their numbers have also plateaued at around 2,000 per year. The number of deceased donors peaked in 2016 and showed a decreasing trend, and the number of living donor KT also showed a decreasing trend after 2019. Because of this stagnant trend, the total incidence of ESKD, which combines HD, PD, and KT over the years, seems to have recently shown a similar trend, but it is not yet clear whether an inflection point has actually been reached. In terms of treatment modality for ESKD patients, more than 80% of patients are consistently receiving renal replacement treatment with hemodialysis in South Korea. The main causes of ESKD are diabetes, hypertension, glomerulonephritis, and cystic kidney disease. However, other causes such as lupus nephritis, vesicoureteral reflux, and unknown causes still contribute to approximately 20% of cases.
