Methods: An internet search was conducted to gather data on the latest developments in academic journal publishing, including scholarly articles, industry reports, and relevant online sources. Results: The recent trends are as follows: increased open access journals and policies supported by some governments; preprint distribution before publication in the peer-reviewed journal; request of mandatory data sharing policies; adoption of graphical abstract; verification of study region and study design in the article title; description according to the reporting guidelines; elucidation of authors' contribution; micropublications, short-form articles, and video summaries; growing volume of researches; the dominance of large commercial publishers in the academic journal market; and emerging countries, including China and India in article production. The most significant trend is the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) platforms in various aspects of the publishing workflow, including topic generation, data analysis, article writing, peer review, manuscript formatting, and language editing. Conclusion: It is challenging for local society journal editors to surpass global commercial publishing companies in various aspects because they lead the scholarly journal standards and market. The recent introduction of generative AI to journal publishing can allow us to compete with those commercial companies. We should use actively generative AI to save time and increase efficiency. |
