초록 Objectives: Heat waves have been found to increase cardiovascular and respiratory morbidity and mortality, as well as the risk of hospitalization and death from acute renal failure and kidney disease. Recurrent dehydration in people who are regularly exposed to high temperatures is known to be the cause of chronic kidney disease accompanied by proteinuria. However, due to the lack of research on kidneys to date, this study aimed to epidemiologically determine the relationship between heat waves and increased risk of proteinuria. Methods: Using data from the National Health Insurance Service, we collected information on 495,060 people who received health checkups in the health checkup cohort from 2009 to 2010. Hourly heat wave warning data provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration was collected, processed, and integrated with data from the National Health Insurance Corporation. The model analyzed the independent effect using a linear mixed model. Results: As the number of heat wave days (h) increased, the number of patients showing proteinuria symptoms during health check-ups significantly increased (B: 0.120, P: <.001). Conclusions: This study provides guidelines for kidney disease patients to respond to climate change. Patients with kidney disease or proteinuria should be especially careful when going out during heat waves. In addition, further research on disease-specific responses is needed through time-specific analysis of heat wave exposure in the future.
