초록 Background: Approximately 1 in 10 people around the world have been diagnosed with chronic kidney Disease, and even young people are susceptible to it.Geographic “hot spots” of chronic renal Disease have emerged in a number of countries, including Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Bulgaria, Croatia, Serbia, India, and Sri Lanka, with an estimated more than 50,000 patients diagnosed with late-stage kidney disease. Asian countries including India, Pakistan, Japan, Korea, Sri Lanka etc have the opportunity to be a global leader in combating the growing epidemic of chronic kidney disease. Kidney Disease cases in Sri Lanka are concentrated in the North Central and North Western provinces and are also appearing in the Uva, Eastern, and Northern Provinces. It is known to be common among North Central Province, especially in Anuradhapura District. Several theories and hypothesis have come up as possible causes for this kidney disease. But since no definite cause has been identified, it is known as CKD-U (Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Etiology). However it is widely believed by the scientific community that pesticide mixed hard ground water and dehydration probably are significant risk factors. However the contribution from other known medical conditions like Diabetes and Hypertension cannot be excluded. The poor socio economic backgrounds of the risk populations aggravates the problem. Therefore it's important to assess the awareness of the disease, its cases and features among these risk groups living in such areas. Methods: A descriptive cross sectional study, using a questionnaire was done on conveniently selected 150 adults from a rural village named Katukeliyawa in the Anuradhapura District (North Central Sri Lanka) Results: Majority were between 18-60 years. Most were females. Nearly 60% had an income less than Rs.50,000 SLR. Only 40.7% of population were confident about their knowledge on CKD. 85.9% were aware of the main urinary symptoms associated with kidney (renal) Disease. But majority identified Urinary infections and Bladder stones as the main causes. 52.7% had undergone screening tests.11% of people were suffering from different kinds of kidney diseases including Urinary and bladder infection, bladder stone, hematurea etc. It was known as risk group. Among them 70% were concern about the kidney health. 62.7% of people use water filters but majority don't boil water before drinking. 46.0 % of the participants stated that they are always concerned about their health regarding Chronic Kidney Disease. Conclusion: Although the awareness of the urinary symptoms of Chronic kidneyDisease was satisfactory, the awareness on causes for Chronic Kidney Disease was poor.
