| 초록 | Background: Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is known to be the ideal option as a vascular access for hemodialysis compared with arteriovenous graft (AVG) or catheter. However, this consensus is controversial in elderly patients because of poor vessel qualities and multiple comorbidities in this population. Methods: A total of 1262 VA were enrolled to current study from VA category of Catholic Medical Center Nephrology registry from 2009 to 2015. We compared the patencies of AVF in elderly population (≥70 years old) with the one in non-elderly one (<70 years old) in our registry cohort in addition to comparing AVF with AVG. Results: AVF of the elderly population (≥70 years old) showed the comparable primary, primary assisted and secondary patencies with non-elderly one (<70 years old) (p = 0.12, p = 0.18 and p =0.58 respectively). In the elderly population, AVF showed better primary assisted and secondary patencies compared with AVG (p <0.001 and p = 0.001 respectively) although primary patencies between AVF and AVG were comparable (p = 0.13). However, AVF of diabetic patients showed decreased primary, primary assisted and secondary patencies compared with the one of non-diabetic patients (p = 0.03, p = 0.02 and p =0.03 respectively). Conclusion: Our study suggested patient`s age does not limit AVF use whereas comorbidities such as diabetes mellitus (DM) should be considered in VA placement. |
