초록 Peritoneal dialysis (PD) has been an established dialysis modality in patients with end stage renal disease (ESRD). However, utilization of PD has consistently decreased during the past decades, while a number of patients treated with hemodialysis has increased over time. This cannot be explained by a single factor and there are medical and non-medical factors on this issue. Notably, survival rates have become similar between two dialysis modalities since early 2000’s. In addition, physicians have made great efforts to decrease peritonitis rates and to minimize glucose-induced peritoneal damage. Special attention has been paid to patients on long-term PD to avoid encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis. In fact, medical factors that have hampered the use of PD has been largely resolved. Nevertheless, a declining trend in utilization of PD is evident worldwide. There are many obstacles for this beyond these medical factors. In this session, I will go over the past history of PD and discuss the current issues that PD are facing today.
